the navigator
In my youth, I spent many months at sea, sometimes not touching land for weeks. It left me with a deep respect for the formidable power of the ocean and the living sky, the jewel-like tapestry of life beneath and above the waterline.
Using found objects: shells, driftwood and stone as inspiration, I wanted to explore the universal elemental states that all life moves through; the transient and the immutable.
Capturing the winds in her sail and driving forward, ‘The Navigator’ forges a path across the open seas, guided by the constellations. Her robe impressed with shells, her hair braided with flowers and seeds, a talisman in her hand, she represents an ancestral woman, a guide perhaps, possessing elemental instincts and knowledge long since forgotten.
Somewhere between the skyline and the seas, these two sculptures (Alcyone and The Navigator) connect - a celestial dance, one moving by the light of the other, in a sister-like pact, providing protection and safety for their onward journeys.
